From tokens to a practical budget
What is a token?
A token is a piece of text a model processes. It may be a word, part of a word, punctuation or bytes within a character. Counts vary by model, language and text; character counts are not a reliable substitute.
Can I estimate output before making a request?
Yes. Enter an expected output token count or paste a sample response. This is a planning assumption, not a prediction. Visible response text may omit billable reasoning and formatting tokens.
How are cache reads and writes priced?
Where rates are available, the calculator splits total input into ordinary input, cache reads and cache writes. Each portion is charged once at its own rate. Actual cache reuse depends on the provider, matching prefixes, minimum length and expiration.
What does the savings figure compare?
Group savings compare your selected group with the platform base price using identical token and cache assumptions. Cache savings are shown separately. These figures do not claim a verified comparison with official provider pricing.
Is my text sent to a server?
Yes. When you calculate, your text is sent to CostRouter for token estimation. The calculator does not forward it to a model provider or generate a response. Calculating does not charge your account.
